Threads Of Responsibility
At Michaela Buerger, we believe that every stitch carries a story — of hands, heritage, and care. Our philosophy is simple: to craft garments with heart, responsibility, and timelessness. The world of fashion has lost touch with memory and craft, and we are committed to offering a different path: one that honors people, the planet, and the beauty of slow creation.
We focus on four pillars that guide everything we do:
EMPOWERMENT
Our knitwear exists because of the talented women who bring it to life. Each sweater, cardigan, or accessory carries the touch of an artisan, shaped by techniques passed down through generations. We nurture our relationships with these makers, supporting fair work, respect, and creative freedom.
Through our work, we aim to support local and rural communities, giving women the opportunity to thrive, earn independently, and carry forward the traditions that have shaped our heritage. We celebrate skill, dedication, and pride — and invite our customers to share in that joy with every piece they wear.
ENVIRONMENT
Handknitting, by its very nature, is gentle on the planet — a slow craft that asks for nothing more than time, skill, and care. Each piece is made by hand, without the use of machines, consuming minimal energy and producing almost no waste.
While our production isn’t always local, it is always thoughtful. We work closely with small communities, ensuring fair conditions and minimizing unnecessary transport whenever possible.
We choose natural, high-quality fibers that respect both people and the environment. Every knit is designed to endure — to be worn, repaired, and treasured for years to come, not just a single season.
RESOURCES
We choose materials with intention. Wool, cashmere, alpaca, and other renewable fibers form the heart of our collections, selected for durability, comfort, and beauty. Packaging is sustainable wherever possible, and our processes respect the earth's resources — because mindful production is as essential as mindful wearing.
We also encourage caring for your knits naturally: airing and gentle use preserve their beauty while minimizing environmental impact.
Our made-to-order system ensures that each knit is created with care and purpose — never rushed, never overproduced.
Every piece takes between 50 and 70 hours of handwork, guided by our belief that good things need time.
We craft only what’s ordered, keeping a tiny reserve of extra pieces for exchanges, so you can find your perfect fit without compromising our values.
It’s our way of aligning beauty, luxury, and responsibility.
LONGEVITY
Our garments are designed for timeless wear. They transcend fleeting trends, honor Alpine heritage, and celebrate feminine elegance. Each handknit piece carries the touch of its maker — a gentle connection between the artisan and the wearer.
If your knit ever needs care, we’ll be delighted to repair it for you. Because true craftsmanship doesn’t end at delivery — it lives on through touch, time, and renewal.
And if your garment’s story with you comes to a pause, we encourage you to pass it on, gift it, or return it to us for reuse. Each piece is created to live many lives, carrying memory and meaning wherever it goes.
